Mellieha Travel Guide

At a Glance

In the resort, or town really, there are several very good hotels together with bars and restaurants where you can watch the world go by.

The beach at Mellieha Bay is actually Malta's largest beach so there's plenty of room to stretch out! Because of this Mellieha is visited by sun lovers, both locals and tourists plus there are a number of ex-pats who live here too.

We must point out that Mellieha does have quite steep hills and so is not suitable for people with mobility difficulties.

Getting Around

Getting around Malta is easy, mainly due to the fact it's a small island but also because of the excellent bus services that serve all the major tourist areas and are inexpensive and efficient. From Mellieha you can catch three buses to Valetta, which is well worth a visit.

Eating and Drinking

Eating out is a must as it gives you the chance to sample the delicious local food with influences from across the Mediterranean to North Africa that creates a unique fusion of tastes. There are restaurants in Mellieha to suit any budget too, from a local café serving fresh fish to fine dining restaurants with spectacular sea views.

Things to See and Do

There's lots to see and do in and around Mellieha and Malta itself. We've said about the beautiful beach but there are plenty of other things to do.

You can catch a bus or taxi to the ferry terminal and enjoy a visit to Gozo or Camino. There are several interesting churches to visit plus along this stretch of coast there are three watchtowers that were built to defend the island. If you can make it to the top you will be rewarded with stunning views across to Gozo and Camino.

Popeye Village is also nearby, this was built for the 1990's film of the same name and is today a popular attraction for children of all ages!

There is also a host of day trips including half or full day tours of Malta. If you want a day on the water there is a choice of day trips on various types of vessel, one of the most popular being a Turkish Gullet to Gozo with a stop off at the Blue Lagoon in Camino.

The Malta Experience is also good. It's like a cinema where you take your seat and a film tells you all about the history of Malta. It gets really interesting when your seat starts shaking and tipping backwards and forwards! Great fun. There is also a 'hop on hop off' sightseeing bus which is always worth doing, its relaxing and you get a lot of information about Malta.

You can also go parasailing where you get to see Malta from a different view!

Nightlife

Don't come to Mellieha for the nightlife, you'll be disappointed! But that's what makes this village popular with many tourists, it's peaceful, so here you can enjoy a relaxing holiday.

Events

There are many different events in Malta throughout the year, a very popular one is in Mellieha itself, it's called the Mellieha Feast which takes please on 8th September each year, in fact this event is so popular there's a national holiday on this day.

Other popular events include folklore events, classical music events and recitals, parades celebrating Malta's history or the SummerDaze festival with bands and singers holding concerts across Malta in August.

There also beer festivals and a festival for arts and crafts. You name it and there's probably a festival for it in Malta!
