The beautiful town of Nessebar sits on a rocky peninsula stretching out into the Black Sea. This UNESCO World Heritage Site combines modern beach holidays with fascinating ancient history dating back 3,000 years.

If you are looking for romantic holidays to Bulgaria, you should visit Nessebar.

You can combine all that fascinating history with a day at the beach or by your hotel pool. Then as the sun sets take a stroll down to a cliff top restaurant with views out to sea. Then after dinner stroll through the town's cobbled streets and take a step back in time.

At a Glance

The old town of Nessebar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a must visit for anyone, or indeed Sunny Beach. Its ancient history is on display as you walk the cobbled streets under the old wooden gabled houses. Pay a visit to one of the ancient churches. 44 churches have been found by now, 15 are available for visit and reconstructed. Some of them built into the ground as a result of the Ottoman occupation. There was a rule that said no church could be higher than a man on a horse, so the ever ingenious people of Nessebar dug into the ground so their church were indeed no high than a man on a horse.

Particularly worth a mention is the mediaeval fortress wall, which seems to curve and undulate like a giant snake around what used to be a castle. But even if you haven't a particular goal in mind, you can get a sense of Bulgarian architecture just by wandering around Nessebar.

Beach lovers will also love the town's beautiful sandy beach and the warm waters of the Black Sea that gently laps the shore, making it perfect for families.

To Eat and Drink

Nessebar has a wide variety of restaurants, some offer delicious local cuisine, especially fish caught the same day or you can enjoy something a bit more 'international'. Whatever your preference you'll find it here. If you get to the old town early one evening head for the restaurants that overlook the sea for the perfect spot to watch the sunset, so glorious here.

After dinner you can enjoy a drink in a local bar long into the night, a perfect end to a perfect day.

Transportation

Regular buses from the surrounding resorts make up much of the public transport here - these tend to be reliable, easy to use for English speakers and reasonably priced. There is also ample opportunity to hire cars, although the narrow cobbled roads of the Old Town mean it is easier to park outside and wander around by foot. Bear in mind that the streets are not very wheelchair friendly, with the cobblestones making things particularly difficult. The distance to Bourgas and Bourgas airport is 25-30 km, and to the centre of Sunny Beach summer resort is 3-4 km away.

Activities

You'll find Nessebar has plenty of activities to keep its tourists happy during the summer holidays. Historical enthusiasts have the town's valuable UNESCO World Heritage worthy charms to explore. For those wanting some fun there is an excellent water park on the edge of town or you can enjoy numerous water sports including windsurfing, snorkelling or even diving.
