For the first time in history, a short distance sprint event in a European championship awarded a medal to a Bulgarian sprinter: Ivet Lalova from Sofia. Ivet, also known as the fastest white woman in the world, ran the 100m sprint in 11.28 seconds and thus took the European title at the European Track and Field Championship in Helsinki.   Elsewhere, in Wimbledon, a Bulgarian tennis player, Tsvetana Pironkova gave Russian title favourite Maria Sharapova a hard time by reeling in the break of serve by which Sharapova had led. Bulgaria at the London 2012 Games
Bulgaria will be represented by 63 athletes in 17 sports at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Yordan Yovchev will bear the Bulgarian national flag in the opening ceremony on Friday. The 39-year-old fourfold world champion gymnast has won four Olympian medals in Sydney and Athens, and the London 2012 Games will be his sixth Olympiad. He will be the oldest male gymnast ever to compete in the Olympics, and also the only male representative of artistic gymnastics in the Bulgarian team this year. Over 30 travel companies have donated prizes for the Together Forever Big Prize Draw organised by Westoe Travel following the Ariana Grande terror attack. Based in South Shields, the agency is raising money for the families of its trainee Chloe Rutherford and boyfriend Liam Curry, who died in the attack, in Manchester on May 22. ABTA Launches "Stop Sickness Scams" Campaign
ABTA has today launched it's “Stop Sickness Scams” campaign which calls for urgent action on fake holiday sickness claims, which are costing the wider travel industry tens of millions of pounds. The campaign calls on the new Government and Justice Minister, David Lidington MP, to urgently crack down on fake holiday sickness claims which are being encouraged by the aggressive marketing of Claims Management Companies, and warns holidaymakers about the consequences of making a false claim.
