For the first time in history, a short distance sprint event in a European championship awarded a medal to a Bulgarian sprinter: Ivet Lalova from Sofia. Bulgaria at the London 2012 Games
Bulgaria will be represented by 63 athletes in 17 sports at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Yordan Yovchev will bear the Bulgarian national flag in the opening ceremony on Friday. The 39-year-old fourfold world champion gymnast has won four Olympian medals in Sydney and Athens, and the London 2012 Games will be his sixth Olympiad. Bulgaria's Black Sea city of Bourgas launched its sixth consecutive festival of sand sculptures last month when it was officially opened with a spectacular live show. The festival is located on a site near the north beach of the city and continues to be a major tourist drawcard since it was opened, raising the possibility that the sculptures could beat the record 120 000 visitors set in 2012.
