Bulgaria may be a great sun, sea and sand destination, but it also has its fair share of cultural and historical sites too. Holidaymakers keen to explore some of the surrounding area close to the popular Varna Resort may wish to visit Pobiti Kamani - an ancient stone forest dating back millions of years.
The site's name literally translates as 'hammered stones', as this phenomenon looks as if it has been created by giants driving the rock formations into the ground. In reality, it is not known how the stones, which are across seven kilometres of desert, came about, with many legends having arisen to explain their existence

Balchik, on the northern part of the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, is one of the northernmost summer resort of the Bulgarian seaside, and is less than 35 miles away from Golden Sands and very close to Cape Kaliakra, where the golf courses of our Golf Holiday Programme are located.
Balchik was founded as a Thracian settlement, its name means small town in Gagauz language, spoken in Moldova. The most famous attraction of Balchik is the former Romanian royal holiday home, as the town was part of Romania twice in the first part of the 20th century.

In the month of February Bulgarians celebrate wine and its patron Saint Trifon, also known as Trifon Zarezan. Wine-makers and Vine-growers love Trifon Zarezan so much that its popularity has now ensured the event is celebrated in accordance with both the old and the new religious calendars. Whilst the old calendar states the date of February 1st as the day of Trifon Zarezan, over the last 15 years, February 14th has also become a day on which the event is celebrated thus providing an excuse for many people to celebrate it twice in the matter of weeks.

Elenite is a small summer holiday resort, north of Sunny Beach. Only residents are allowed to enter the holiday village, which was built in 1985. The villas and hotels have magificent seaviews. Water sports, aquapark and lots of entertaining facilities await the holidaymakers wanting to relax. The main attracting feature is obviously the flat sandy beach.
Vehicles must be left outside, in the guarded car park. Residents are transported to the hotel within the village with small carts.

For the first time in history, a short distance sprint event in a European championship awarded a medal to a Bulgarian sprinter: Ivet Lalova from Sofia.
Ivet, also known as the fastest white woman in the world, ran the 100m sprint in 11.28 seconds and thus took the European title at the European Track and Field Championship in Helsinki.

Bulgaria will be represented by 63 athletes in 17 sports at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
Yordan Yovchev will bear the Bulgarian national flag in the opening ceremony on Friday. The 39-year-old fourfold world champion gymnast has won four Olympian medals in Sydney and Athens, and the London 2012 Games will be his sixth Olympiad. He will be the oldest male gymnast ever to compete in the Olympics, and also the only male representative of artistic gymnastics in the Bulgarian team this year.
The Bulgarian Olympic Team will consist of nine wrestlers, two weightlifters, a men’s volleyball team, one male and one female tennis
