International Mountain Day

International Mountain Day
11 Dec 2024

International Mountain Day, celebrated on December 11th each year, serves as a reminder of the importance of mountains to our planet and the need to protect these majestic landscapes. This day not only highlights the ecological significance of mountain ranges but also emphasizes their cultural, economic, and social value. One of the most stunning mountain ranges in Europe is the Balkans, which boasts breath-taking scenery and rich biodiversity.

The Balkan Mountains, stretching across Bulgaria and Serbia, are home to some of the highest peaks in the region. Among them, the highest is the Musala Peak, this stands tall at 2,925 meters, making it the highest point in the Balkans and the Rila Mountain range. Musala is not only a favourite destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts but also offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, including glacial lakes and diverse flora and fauna. You can visit Borovets to see this mountain during our winter months from December to March.

Another notable peak on the list at number 3 is Vihren,  reaching 2,914 meters in the Pirin Mountain range. Vihren is known for its steep faces and challenging trails, attracting climbers from all over the world. The area around Vihren is rich in biodiversity, including various endemic plant species and wildlife, making it a significant area for conservation efforts. This peak can be accessed from our resort of Bansko.

Celebrating International Mountain Day is an opportunity to appreciate the beauty and importance of the Balkans' mountains, particularly in Bulgaria. These peaks not only provide recreational opportunities but also play a vital role in local culture and economy. By promoting sustainable tourism and conservation efforts, we can ensure that these majestic mountains continue to inspire future generations.

If you would like to head out to either of the mountains above, please see our website for available winter and summer holidays to Bansko or Borovets.
