New Terminal At Varna Airport Opens For Business
Yesterday was a landmark day for the city of Varna as the new passenger terminal at Varna Airport on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast came in to full use, 12 days after its official opening. As of 3pm, all arrivals and departures began passing through the new terminal, announced by the airport on its website.
The first serviced domestic flight was to Sofia with the national carrier "Bulgaria Air" while the first international passengers served in the new Varna Airport terminal came from Minsk with the aviation company “Belavia”. At the same time, the old terminal at Varna Airport closed after 41 years of operation.
At 20 000 sq m, the new passenger terminal area is three times the size of its predecessor and the total investment in the new airport terminal and related infrastructure adds up to more than 75 million leva (approx £33m).
The new Varna Airport terminal is a modern facility with a contemporary interior and the state-of-the-art passenger service systems, attractive shopping areas, cafes and restaurants. The design, developed by world renowned architects and designers aims to maintain the holiday mood of the passengers during their entire stay at the airport, combined with characteristic elements of the Bulgarian architecture and nature.
The opening ceremony was attended by Mr. Danail Papazov, Minister of Transport who said "Our city now has a modern European airport that offers quality services to consumers, smart and state-of-the-art interior design. Soon the new terminal at Bourgas Airport will open, and once constructed, the two new terminals automatically become the property of the Bulgarian state. This clearly shows the advantages of attracting private investors in the management and maintenance of priority sites for the state, such as airports, leading to their rapid and high quality modernization"
CEO of Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD Miss Aletta Freiin von Massenbach added "Today's event is the result of hard work of thousands of people who planed, designed and performed a truly European Co-Production, called Terminal 2 at Varna airport"
